The Walk And Me

I don’t know how much you know about me or what I want to achieve, so I’ll start from the beginning. I’m Josh Henderson, I’m 18 and I’m currently studying for my A levels at Hessle High School. I have always enjoyed the outdoors, having been involved with Scouts for the last 10 years, I have gained many valuable skills in rainor shine and I have finally decided that it’s time for me not only to go on my own but also to use my skills for a good cause. Finding myself nearly at the end of my education at Hessle High I decided that I would not get a better chance to fulfil this dream, and so I have taken a year out before I go to university to challenge myself.

The ‘Challenge'

challenge I have set myself is somewhat a daunting one; I am walking the ‘height’ of the USA from the Canadian border to Mexico. Starting in late June 2008 I will be following the Pacific Crest Trail, a route that winds it’s way down from the North of the West coast of the US to the South. The trail itself covers 2650 miles, zigzagging its way from Canada to Mexico through Washington, Oregon and California the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) boasts the greatest elevation changes of any of America's National Scenic Trails, allowing it to pass through six out of seven of North America's eco-zones including high and low desert, old-growth forest and arctic-alpine country. Indeed, the PCT is a trail of diversity and extremes. From scorching desert valleys in Southern California to rain forests in the Pacific Northwest, the PCT offers a unique and varied experience. As you can probably tell it’s no easy feat to complete the entire trail, in fact only around 50% of hikers who attempt the whole distance actually succeed in hiking the entire trail. It’s that hard in fact that more people have summated Everest than Thru-Hiked the PCT (wish me luck)

I'm aiming to complete my hike in 6-7 months, that is of course weather and injury permitting, I'll be keeping a blog when I can get to a computer and there's always my guest book so when I get out there you can still contact me.

If anyone likes the sound of what I'm doing and fancies joining me just let me know, even if you just want to do a small section of the walk you're more than welcome. Just drop me a message!
